The Right to Bear Arms

Topic: The Second Amendment/Right to Bear arms

A "Long Barreled" Debate

Synopsis:The right to bear arms has been a long time talked about topic that has many different viewpoints. To begin I am going to take a detailed look into the Second Amendment and what it is really about. The right to bear arms comes from the second amendment of the United States constitution. It states a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. We as Americans have the right to keep and bear arms, meaning within boundaries we can own firearms and as many as we want. Considering this was an amendment it means that this was not an original issue that was put forth in the constitution. The original men in office were not too worried about this issue and didn't think it would be such a big issue in the future. Currently is subject is still in "limbo" meaning it could be changed and guns could not be awarded to anyone. Many people believe that guns should not be open to purchase to the public and many believe we should keep the right to keep and bear arms, I believe we should keep the right, considered things are done illegally anyway and if innocent citizens don't have the right to protect themselves we would be ruled by the criminals who don't follow laws anyway.

Analysis: You can see that it would be a bad idea to take guns away from the public. First off if guns are taken away the people will be afraid and more hatred will arise between the people who actually choose to have guns and those that choose to obey the law and remove them from their possession. If innocent people don’t have protection situations could be switched. For example on March 10 of this year, Miguel Lopez Hernandez, 25, and an armed accomplice entered Kelly Jewelers. The accomplice produced his handgun, ordered the store manager to get on the floor, then tossed a roll of duct tape to Hernandez. The manager, however, was quickly able to retrieve his own handgun. The armed assailant dashed out the door upon seeing the firearm, leaving Hernandez armed only with the roll of duct tape. Hernandez was arrested and is under investigation for aggravated robbery; his accomplice remains at large. (KSL 5 News, Midvale, UT, 3/10/12) First off the criminals were performing and illegal crime anyway, holding someone up and stealing from him, these kind of people play the bigger man card and they don’t care if guns are illegal or not. Now if the citizen would not have had his own firearm he would have needed to defend himself without a powerful weapon and could have been seriously injured or hurt. This is proof that weapons save lives and the death rate would increase if they were taken from the innocent lives of people.

  1. Although you pose a position on the issue, I'm not convinced arming the population is the answer to the nations ills.
